Birth Story

After having a wonderful afternoon at Palm B with my best friend, kids, hubby and intended parents we headed to Longhorn Steakhouse for an early dinner. I enjoyed a 10oz New York Strip steak. We went home and relaxed. While the boys were in the bath I felt a little nauseous but put it down to eating too much. We chatted and ended up going to bed around 11pm. We had joked with the intended father that I if I wasn’t being induced  how long would she stay put, with the way I was feeling I figured she’d bake for at least another week. Boy were we wrong!
We went to bed and my hubby and I chatted for a while. He expressed concerns that even though we were scheduled for an induction the next morning I hadn’t had any labor symptoms yet. Not 15min later from him saying that I started having pains. Contraction pains!! The contractions I started having were mild, irregular, lasting 30 seconds and coming every 1 minute or so. Pain level about a 2. After a while hubby thinks we should call IP’s and head to the hospital. I’m hesitant and keep telling him lets wait for one more contraction. He continues to get ready and I reluctantly get dressed and do my makeup.  He calls the IP’s who was sleeping and tells them what’s going on. IF thought we were joking! We leave the house just after 12am. We start timing the contractions with songs and they’re coming every 3-4min with the pain slowly intensifying. Lots of deer on the road to Hospital.
We arrive at the ER at SM at 1am. We walk in and it feels like the contractions are slowing down.  We sign in and wait for them to bring a wheelchair (which I don’t want but hubby insists.) I have another contraction but t seems milder. We get taken upstairs to L&D but all of the staff we speak to don’t have us on the list for an induction at 5am! We go into an exam room and I give a urine sample and change into a hospital gown. Contractions have stopped. We get introduced to R, a L&D nurse. She hooks me up to a monitor and asks me bunch of questions.  I haven’t had a contraction in a while which is stressing me out. Not seconds late they started up again. R told us that if I didn’t progress they’d probably send me home. She checked me and I was 5cm dilated already!!!!!!! I wasn’t going home!
After a few minutes and some contractions later I got wheeled into the delivery room, Room 6. I told R that I was nervous about the IV and she said not to worry that her supervisor was a pro. A little while later J (the head nurse) came in to put in my IV. We listened to her talk and asked her where she was from, found out she was from our hometown, Cape Town! IP’s  arrived just after 2am.
Dr. P (my Doctor) wasn’t on call (she was only coming in at 7am) and Dr. Pre who was there said that he probably wouldn’t end up delivering.
My contractions were getting much stronger so Dr. Pre suggested he call the anesthesiologist to give me my epidural. This was done and I sat back to relax a little bit. The epidural didn’t work 100% and I still had a lot of feeling in the lower right hand side of my back. The pain was bearable though. R came and put in my catheter. For the next hour or so hubby and I just relaxed, chatting with IP’s and taking some pictures. At one point my heart rate dropped a lot and I got very pale and lethargic. R came and gave me some medication in my IV to up my heart rate, this perked me right up.
Around  5am the contractions became very intense (I could still feel them in part of my back) and I knew the baby was coming (so did hubby although we didn’t verbalize it.) R came in to check me. I had had my bloody show and I was 10cm dilated, but he baby was still quite high up. She left and a few minutes later J came in and said “Ons gaan jou water breek” which means “We’re going to break your water.” She was happy because she had hoped to help deliver the baby before she left at 7am.
Dr. Pre came in and checked me and confirmed that I was 10cm and that my water had already broken (probably during the bloody show). They started prepping for when I’d start pushing. IF came in and said hi and bye (he’s squeamish) and then went next door to wait. IM stood next to me on the right with hubby and R and J stood on my left.
At 5:45am we started pushing. By then I couldn’t really feel the contractions so I had to wait for J or Dr. Pre to tell me when to push. The first 2 sets of 3 pushes each (holding my breath for 10 seconds on each push) I kept pushing in my face and had to remember how to push. The next 3 sets I started to remember how to push. Hubby was my rock throughout the whole process. Baby girl was born at 6:02am after only 15 minutes of pushing. She weighed 7lb 10 oz and was 19 inches long. They rushed her next door so she could get cleaned up and bond with the IP’s.
I didn’t have any tears just some abrasions/bruises or as Dr. Pre called them “skid marks”. He delivered the placenta with just a little bit of manipulation and pushing on my belly.
Hubby and I hung out in the room and dozed on and off while I was cleaned up as well as the room. Dr. P arrived just after 7am. I wished she had delivered the baby but it all worked out.
IP’s came to visit with the baby and we got to hold her and take pictures and chat.
I ordered breakfast (after a lot of back and forth, it took about an hour!) and it was the best coffee I’d had since I became pregnant.
My new nurse arrived and we eventually moved into a recovery room (after my epidural worse off and I could pee and clean up.)
My BFF came and stayed the night with me and we chatted and slept and dozed on and off while I was mostly high. I saw a tech/nurse every few hours to check me and give me medication.  We visited the IP’s with their baby and visa versa as they stayed in the room opposite me.
I was discharged the next day at 11am.
IP’s and baby left the following afternoon.
Recovery at home has been good as I’ve had my BFF and hubby to look after me. Things are slowly getting back to normal. My hormones are a little out of wack so I’m very emotional and kinda homesick but it’ll get better I know I’m just so happy for the wonderful journey it was!
It was such an amazing experience, I can’t wait to do it again!!

D-day is almost upon us!

I can’t believe that the induction date is just around the corner (although she could come anyday now.) I feel huge like an enourmous whale. We had a wonderful Christmas (I was lucky enough to get a brand new Nikon digital camera from Caleb) which I was so shocked and excited about. It takes beautiful picture. I can’t wait to go outside and do some experimenting with it. It’ll be nice for him to use at the birth too! The boys loved Christmas too.
The boys and I got to meet M&E for lunch in Savannah last weekend which was very special (it’s the last time I’ll see them before the birth!) they treated us and brought Christmas presents!
I’ve had a weird cold the past week, it seems everyday I loose and gain a new sympon. Last Sunday I had an afternoon nap and wke up to body aches everywhere (so abd I could barely walk!) a migraine and very bad lower back pain. That stayed till Monday night 😦 then that went away and I got a cough and a stuffy/runny nose. Now all I have is a bit of a stuffy nose. Weird but I’ll take that over the body pain anyday (Monday I ended up having 2 baths and a shower to ease the pain).
I had a regular Dr’s appointment on Monday and everything was fine. I’m not dialted, belly measuring perfect, heart rates good (mine and the babies) and weight gain is at around 17lbs total (not too bad). I have my final (hopefully) appointment this Monday before teh induction the following Monday the 13th.
Our BFF’s from NC are coming down next weekend to help out for a week which I am so excited for! Other than that not much else has been happening. Rang in the New Year very quietly. So the next time I type I’ll be bumpless and should have some beautiful baby pictures to show off. This has been an amazing journey that I can’t wait to complete (the final birth part and completeing a family being the most exciting and anticipated thing EVER!) I am so excited!!! Anyway some belly pictures:

It’s almost push time :)

I can’t believe how the time has flown! In some ways it’s gone by so fast, others it’s going by so slowly. As of today we are 35 weeks and 6 days pregnant. Tomorrow will be 36 weeks! We’re all excited and nervous. We have a tentative induction date of around January 13th but technically she could arrive anytime.
I went in yesterday for my 2 week regular appointment which will now become weekly visits and all was good. My cervix was closed and her heart rate was in the 130’s. I’ve also only gained around 16lbs so far which I’m pretty happy with.
We had a Growth Scan done. The U/S technician said she’s around 6 – 6 1/2 pounds and is measuring about a week ahead (which doesn’t, however change the due date.) See pictures below. So all in all she’s doing goo. I’m doing well too. Just tired and my feet get swollen.

TMI ALERT … I couldn’t figure out how to do a spoiler wall of text so I’ll be brief. I have the worst hemorrhoid in history. I “affectionately” call him Hemi. Well Hemi arrived last Wednesday and is still hanging around. Purple bloody and angry. I had to “sleep” on the couch for a few nights because sitting up right was the ONLY “comfortable” position. Hemi “burst” somewhat on Monday night but is still there. The medication I have I guess is trying to work to reduce his size/get rid of him but doesn’t do much for the pain. The days are not too bad. Nights are the worst. I find a warm bath and vaseline work the best. Hoping he’ll ease off soon and be gone before the baby arrives.  END OF TMI.

My co-workers were nice enough to give me a little Non-baby shower today. (See picture below) Cookies, cupcakes, brownies, a gift card and a beautiful card filled with very sweet messages.

I am almost done with my Christmas shopping. Caleb is mostly done, although I do want to get him a few more little things tis weekend. We have to order the things for the boys tonight.  I also caved this year and started doing the Elf on the Shelf. Although I didn’t do the regular Elf that comes with the book, I did the same one but the Plush toy. He was named “Elfie” by our 4 year old. The boys have been having fun seeing what he gets up too. Next year I’ll have to get creative!

I spoke to my BFF today and she is going to be coming down the week the baby is due to partly watch the boys incase Caleb has to be at the hospital with me and they’re not at school but mostly to come visit. I’m so excited, her BF will also be coming down a few days later and be spending a long weekend with us. I can’t wait, we miss them so much! It’ll be so great to see them. We have a backup plan incase the baby comes early but either way they’ll still come down to visit 🙂

The weather is getting cooler which is lovely. I have to get some fire logs this weekend so that Caleb and I can sit outside by the fire pit some evenings when the boys are in bed. I want to try and go and see the local Festival of Lights this weekend. It’s a local nature reserve/trail that they set up with lights and music, it’s really pretty. Just have to twist Caleb’s arm! We actually might be able to take Sam if she’s on a lead, will have to call and see…

Anyway I’m sure there was more I wanted to post but I can’t remember 😛 I’ll def try and post at least one more entry before she arrives.  Bump pictures ahead:

It’s the most wonderful time of the year …

WOW I am so behind in posting an update it’s scary 🙂

So right now I am 32 weeks along and officially in the 3rd trimester Less than 2 months to go. EDD is around 1/15/13!  Updates, the chiropractor has been great, I still get lower back pain now and then but I try and have nice warm showers when that happens.

E&M came down for Halloween which was fun. We went trick or treating (it was so hot) I was lazy and ended up just staying in my Cruella Deville outfit. We then took them out for dinner. The next day was our court hearing/birth order. I got us all lost (blush) which was stressful, luckily the judge had pushed us back and was seeing other random cases first. So we ended up waiting for about an hour and a half before he saw us. He wasn’t the most friendly of judges but it went smooth enough.  We went and pre-registered at the hospital too.

We had to miss going up for the baby shower which was disappointing but I was just to tired to travel. I was told it went off beautifully. I can’t wait to see pictures from E&M.

Since then my Dr. appointments have been pretty regular. I go every 2 weeks now. I failed my 1 hour glucose test (boo) but thankfully passed the 3 hour test (my Dr. apparently wasn’t worried at all J) We’re looking at possible inducing come January if everything looks good. I’m hoping my body will follow along the same courses that it did with my 2 boys but we’ll see. She could surprise us all. For right now she needs to bake a little longer. Although I am exhausted ALL THE TIME…. Despite being an old woman and going to bed early almost every night.  And it’s not like I can even drink coffee or soda for the caffeine because 1. it make me feel so sick and 2. it’s not good for the baby.

Last weekend we went to a nearby town to have a 3d/4d scan done. The lady was nice although a little eccentric. Pictures turned out lovely, despite the baby being a stubborn little miss and holding the umbilical cord in front of her face! Lately she has been moving around like crazy (I’m talking somersaults!!) mostly in the evening.

I can’t believe that it’s Thanksgiving next week already. I’ll be at home on Thursday and Friday (We’ll probably put the Christmas tree up on Thursday … can’t wait!) Now we just have to decide if we’re going to do a nice beef roast or chicken. I’ll wait till closer to the day and see what the grocery store has. I will be making Malva pudding (a sugary apricot sponge cake) so I have to go to World Market sometime and buy some custard.

Anyway onto the bump pictures up to date: Weeks 27-32 …. And HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!

Countdown to Halloween

I know it’s been over a month since I last updated but finding time to write is hard (or rather I’m just terribly lazy!)

Today we (meaning me, Caleb, M&E) are 26 weeks along. Less than around 100 days to go … crazy how the time is flying!

A little update on what’s been going on. I did end up going to Asheville to visit my BFF for her birthday. We had lots of fun and she was very surprised and happy to see me. The drive wasn’t too bad, a little tiring.

The weather has been cooling down nicely except for the odd HOT day. We take advantage of the cool/hot weather by going to the beach which has been fun.

I’ve also started going to see a chiropractor for my lower back (and because it’s really good to go when you’re pregnant.) I went for my second session today which was great (much better than the first which hurt, which I knew it would!)

I’ve also been so tired lately (and moody poor Caleb and the boys get the brunt of my hormones! I’m trying to be better about it though.)

I am on a Halloween and Fall high right now, it’s my favourite time of year. It’s getting cooler, Halloween is around the corner, then Thanksgiving and then Christmas! I can’t wait! I decorated at home and at work so I am in full scary mode. The boys are dressing up as Batman and Captain Hook, I will be Cruella Deville at work and then as a scary mummy when we go trick or treating.

We have our court date set for November 1st – basically the birth order making sure the hospital and the court know that this precious little baby isn’t mine and that she belongs to E&M! It’ll be fun to see them! Then a friend of E’s is throwing her a baby shower on November 10th which we get to go to as well, looking forward to that, although I have some secret planning that I have to do that I must not forget!

We have some fun plans for this weekend. Caleb and I are taking the boys to a nearby farm stall that has hayrides, pumpkin painting and a petting farm yard which I know they’ll enjoy. Then there is a great “fancy” burger place called Fat-Patties that Caleb has been dying to try (twist my arm why don’t ya!) which we’ll go to for lunch. We might even get a trip to the beach squeezed in too (maybe the waves will be good for Caleb to surf!)

Anyway, I’ll try not wait as long to post next time. Onto the obligatory belly pictures (weeks 22-26) plus a bonus bikini one:

And we have movement…..

What a whirlwind couple of weeks it’s been! 2 weeks ago we drove up to Lake Summit NC and spent a long weekend with E&M and some of their (and our friends) it was AMAZING!
We all had so much fun, the boys especially! We ate, played in the lake, went on the boats, Caleb went skiing (he got it the first time going out! I was so proud of him! E’s teachings helped 🙂 )
The family cabin we stayed in was beautiful, and the views? To die for. I’ll try and put some pictures up tonight.
The Friday night we got to meet some of E&M’s friends and our best friends who live 30min away came round for dinner too, good times were had. Supper was incredible, chicken curry! I think E&M’s baby enjoys spicy food as I do!
I got to wear a bikini too, but most of the time it just looked like I had a beer belly …

Oh which reminds me. On the drive up we had to stop at Wal-mart for a potty break (the joys of travelling with small children.) Anyway as we’re walking around the store we passed an older gentleman who had a rather large stomach (think Santa Claus) anyway my oldest looks at him and then me and exclaims:

“Mama look! That man has a baby in his belly too!”

I couldn’t stop laughing (the innocence of children!) Luckily the man didn’t hear!

The weekend went all to quickly and Monday morning we left early to drive home. Soon after we got home I left to meet E&M in Savannah for our Gender U/S. The traffic was really bad for them but luckily we were the last patients for the day so the U/S tech waited for them. It was such a lovely visit. We got to see the baby move around so much (very stubborn little thing, obviously gets it from mom and dad!) Everything is perfect  

I had another regular Dr’s appointment with my Dr the following Wednesday and everything was good there too, heart beat was in the 150’s which is good (love hearing that sound, it makes me think of galloping horses!)

I knew for sure that I felt this precious little angel move on August 29th. I was lying in bed and felt a nudge. Wondering if it was a gas bubble and so I just waited. Sure enough a moment later I felt another nudge in the same spot  Since then I feel the baby quite regularly, it’s still very soft but definitely a baby! Late evenings are the babies most active time!

This past Labor Day weekend I surprised myself by completing 2 tasks that I set out to do! Normally I’ll think of something, say I want to do it and then never get round to it because I get lazy! So I cleaned out my car (HUGE ACHIEVEMENT!) it just needs a good vacuum and a wash but that can wait. I also refurbished an old cork board into a jewelry holder (got the idea from Pinterest) turned out pretty well. Here is a picture:

Craft

So other than that nothing much else exciting is going on 🙂 I am planning something exciting in 2 weeks time (not baby related) but I can’t share what that is yet (I hope I didn’t say anything in an earlier post, if I did, I blame it on pregnancy brain!) EDIT: Ok nevermind, I did post about it ha ha, my BFF’s birthday is in 3 weeks time and I’m planning to surprise her 🙂

I haven’t posted any bump pictures in a while so here you go!

17 Weeks and feeling GREAT!

I probably shouldn’t jinx myself but I can’t help it!
It’s funny. When you have really bad morning sickness you think it’s never going to end. You think you’ll feel like this forver. Throwing up daily. But then one day you feel a little better and then suddenly no more morning sickness, no more throwing up (if you know what not to eat.) For me my vomit triggers are: spaghetti sauce, most candies/chocolates, most dairy, very greasy fast food, soda’s/juice. So you’ve guessed it, I feel GREAT!
This past weekend I went and bought a few dresses at Ross and the thrift store. Not too many because my bump is still relatively small but still. A co-worker of Caleb’s works at Michael Kors and she told him about a floor length empire lined dress they have. he said I should go and try it on, so I might do that this weekend.

We/I have some exciting things coming up. In two weeks time we’ll be going up to NC to stay with E&M at their Lake Cabin (cannot wait!) hopefully we’ll get to see our BFF’s too (who live nearby) I really want them to meet E&M and visa versa. Caleb might get to try water skiing! Then the Monday after our mini-vacation we have our 20 week U/S gender scan in Savannah! So excited for that! Even though we all know what the gender is, it’s still fun to go for U/S’s! I’m also planning a secret girls weekend for my BFF for her birthday in September. It’s her BIG birthday year (28) she’s always been excited for this specific birthday (not 30) so I’m going to surprise her. I have envelopes of 28 different things that we’re going to do over 2 days. Hopefully that will work out!

Oh and before I forget here are the latest bunch of belly pictures:

13 weeks along

Today (7/11/13) we are now 13 weeks pregnant. I met E&M in Savannah on Monday for an in depth U/S to test for multiply things and it was so good to see them. The U/S machine that was used was amazing. The little wee one is only about 3 inches long but the machine was so detailed. We saw the face, hands, spine, hands, nose everything! It was beautiful. We had our transfer dates mixed up so our official due date is actually January 15th again 9what it was before) just to confuse things! So the Ultra sound technician “confirmed” the gender which we already knew from the testing E&M had done with the Embryo’s. Not going to say it now until after we have the gender U/S next month. I’m sure E&M are going to do some cool gender reveal thing. I wish I had thought of doing the gender reveal cake idea with my children! After the U/S E and I went out for lunch (I had a great veggie pita) and then we walked along River Street. It was so much fun walking and talking. We looked inside all the tiny shops and even got fudge at the sweet shop …. although I can’t eat it right now, sweets and chocolate make me so sick 😦 Caleb was happy with the fudge though. E gave me a pregnancy body pillow which I was so happy for (I can’t wait to use it when my belly is bigger) she is so sweet and thoughtful. She also bought our boys little gifts too. Caleb and the boys met us at E7M’s hotel where we left and went for dinner at a fancy little restaurant. I was nervous at first because it wasn’t kid friendly but our boys were very well behaved. The food was really good, especially the appetizers. We shared spicy muscles (I just dipped bread in the sauce) but it was Caleb’s first time eating muscles and he loved them. We also had spicy warm olive (AMAZING). The rest of the evening was wonderful.

Fast forward a week … my morning sickness has been more or less the same except for yesterday and today, it seems to be going (please please please) I hope I’m not jinxing it now. Oh well!
I’ve been obsessing over period drams this past week and enjoyed watching the BBC drama “North & South” what a beautiful love story. Mr. Thornton is slowly replacing Mr. Darcy in my books ….
Here are a couple of belly pictures (I took at work in the bathroom, stylish I know!) I still have to edit the “official” ones we take at home and upload them.

Groundhog Day

6/18/2013:

So I (or rather E&M) are now just over 9 weeks pregnant and things are going well. I’m still nauseous 95% of the time and throwing up every other day but it’s all good, totally worth it! So I’m basically stuck in my own personal ground hog day.
Basically my weekdays consist of:

6:20am – Get up, take the dog out, feed the kids, take dog out, get coffee and Caleb’s breakfast ready, take dog out, get dressed and do make-up, take dog out.
7:25am – take boys to school
8am-5pm – Work
5:20pm – Pick boys up from school
5:30pm – 8pm – Dinner, walk and feed the dog, bath, boys to bed.
8pm – 10:30pm – Caleb tiling while I do dishes and then relax and try not throw up 😉

Weekends are pretty much the same except throw in the boys and I in the dining room while poor Caleb tiles 🙂 I must admit the lounge looks amazing though, and he’s almost done, hopefully we should have the house back to normal this weekend!

I still have to upload belly pictures and the first scan, I am so behind on that! Excited though, our new dishwasher is arriving on Saturday, no more hand washing 🙂 And I just signed up for the Summer Switch Witch on the BPAL forum. Basically you get assigned a persona and you send them gifts and cards anonymously and in return someone send stuff to you too. I love it and I can’t wait till I’m matched with my witchee. If you love perfume you have to check out Black Phoenix (link is at the bottom of my blog) they sell AMAZING perfume blends.

I’m trying not to get my hopes up but I’m feeling a little better, not 100% but certainly not as nauseous as I’ve been, trying to stay positive but I don’t want to say it out loud incase the nauseous comes back ha ha!

6 Week Belly Picture

6 Weeks Belly

Here is the first belly picture and the Andrew Baby is the size of a Sweet Pea (just one pea not the whole pod 🙂 ) although I do have a little belly now it’s not all baby ha ha. Most of it is from the medication that I’m on that makes me bloated and I put on weight around my belly, thighs and hips! Also I’m totally relaxed in this photo, not very flattering 😉
